FAQs

How does the process work?

After booking, you will receive an intake form via email, to be completed before your scheduled free consult. Consults will last 5 to 10 minutes, and take place via the Jane app. You will receive an email just before your consult prompting you to be signed into the app on a phone, tablet or computer. As this is an audio telemedicine consult, there is no need to turn on your video. The Naturopathic Doctor will confirm your personal information, discuss your needs, and prepare your test requisition forms.

Instructions on how to complete your test(s) will be available in the app shortly after the consult. These will usually involve taking a requisition to LifeLabs, where they will collect a blood sample. You will then be notified by email when the test results are ready to view in Jane.

Can I request more than one test in a pre-testing consult?

Yes. You can indicate which tests you are interested in on the pre-consult intake form.

How will I receive my results?

You will receive an email notification indicating you have a document to review in the Jane app. Log in, navigate to the documents tab and scroll down to the bottom to find the latest entry. You can download and print these documents.

Results will come with a brief explanation. You have the option to book a discuss results consult to go over your test results with a Naturopathic Doctor. This consult is optional.

What can I expect in the discuss results consult?

This optional consult is offered for you to discuss your results with a Naturopathic Doctor. The doctor will explain your test results to you, and give you personalized recommendations. This call will be 10-20 minutes, and take place via the Jane app.

What is Jane?

Jane is an Electronic Medical Records app commonly used in BC. It’s a private and secure place where you can book, have consults, and obtain your requisitions and test results.

Is this service or testing covered by MSP?

No. This is a private healthcare service.

Is this service or testing covered under extended health benefits?

Yes. Consultation costs can be claimed under Naturopathic Medical benefits. Some plans also cover the cost of testing. You are responsible for determining the coverage you have.

Where do I go to get tested?

Your requisition will come with a link to a list of LifeLabs locations. The exceptions are Genetic Health testing, for which the lab company will arrange a blood draw appointment directly with you, likely at your home; and SIBO testing, which will require a self-administered breath collection once you receive your test kit in the mail.

Why test Vitamin D?

Testing will identify if you have a deficiency.

Vitamin D is necessary for absorption of calcium. It’s important for maintaining strong bones and teeth, as well as for healthy muscle function, brain function and immune health.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in BC and is linked to lack of sunshine. You are more at risk of having vitamin D deficiency if you are over 65, have dark skin, don’t go outside often, or have intestinal, liver or kidney disease. Treatments may include oral supplementation, vitamin D injections, and going out in the sun more often!

Why test vitamin B12?

Testing will identify if you have a deficiency.

Vitamin B12 is important for DNA and cell metabolism. It plays a crucial role in red blood cell formation.

Vitamin B12 deficiency will lead to fatigue and anemia if untreated. Deficiency occurs in 5-10% of people, and is more common with age, if you have an intestinal condition and if you eat a mainly plant-based diet. Treatments may include oral supplementation, vitamin B12 injections, and eating more foods that are rich in B12.

Why test ferritin (iron)?

Testing will identify if you have a deficiency.

Iron is necessary for your body to make hemoglobin for red blood cells to transport oxygen around your body.

Iron deficiency can make you feel tired, weak, dizzy or short of breath. It is very common in women, vegetarians and vegans, and those with intestinal conditions which impair absorption.

Treatments may include oral supplementation, iron infusions, and eating more foods that are rich in iron.

Why do a healthy living assessment?

To help you assess your general health and determine any proactive actions that may improve your health and prevent disease.

A results consult with a Naturopathic Doctor is recommended if you receive abnormal results.

Why do a metabolic assessment?

This assessment is useful before or during diet & lifestyle changes for weight loss, to investigate unexpected weight gain, to assess fatigue, and as a preliminary screen for cardiovascular disease risk factors. The assessment will help you to determine any proactive actions that may improve your health and prevent disease.

A results consult with a Naturopathic Doctor is recommended if you receive abnormal results.

Why do genetic health screening?

A genetic health screen can help identify likely preventable conditions such as cancer or heart disease, based on your genetic risk.

The assessment will help you to determine any proactive actions that may improve your health and prevent disease, as well as seek out genetic counseling.

We use Invitae and Invitae’s lab. Their mission is to bring comprehensive genetic information into mainstream medicine to improve healthcare for billions of people.

A consult with a Naturopathic Doctor is recommended if you receive abnormal results.

Why do the PULS test?

To assess your risk of having a heart attack in the next five years. Nine measurements are used to calculate a PULS cardiac score, and expected score and heart age.

Abnormal results can direct you to take proactive actions to improve your heart health and monitor your progress over time.

Why test cholesterol and lipids?

High cholesterol and/or lipids can lead to heart disease. Around 40% of adults in Canada have high cholesterol and/or lipids, often with no symptoms.

You may be more at risk of having high cholesterol if you are inactive, overweight, eat high quantities of saturated or trans fats, or have a family history of high cholesterol. Risk generally increases with age, especially in women after menopause. It’s important to get tested regularly, and take steps to lower high levels by modifying your diet and lifestyle, and in some cases, taking medications.

Why test Omega-3s?

Omega-3 deficiency is common in North America. An imbalance between Omega-3 and Omega-6 can lead to skin conditions, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and obesity.

Vegetarians and those with intestinal conditions that inhibit absorption of Omega-3s are more at risk of being deficient. You may also have an Omega-3 deficiency if you have dry eyes, dry hair or skin, joint pain or stiffness, or suffer from depression.

Treatments may include oral supplementation, or eating more foods that are rich in Omega-3s.

Why test AMH?

AMH tests are helpful If you are considering egg freezing or fertility treatments, or if you have a family of premature ovarian failure or early menopause. AMH is the easiest and most useful way to determine ovarian reserve, as it can be tested at any point during the menstrual cycle. Ovarian reserve testing is a way to approximate where a woman is in her reproductive life and time until menopause. It helps to determine the quantity of oocytes (eggs) remaining, or to predict when menopause will start.

Testing empowers women to take proactive steps to plan their life and family goals as well as proactively implement diet, lifestyle and supplement practices that could improve the remaining oocytes quality, and thus increase the chance of pregnancy and a healthy baby. The incidence of low AMH, and thus low ovarian reserve, increases as you age.

A results consult with a Naturopathic Doctor is recommended if you are not familiar with this test, or it’s your first time testing AMH.

Note that AMH does not predict egg quality, nor does it predict the chance of getting pregnant naturally.

Why do a sperm analysis?

To determine if your sperm is within a healthy range for reproduction.

The incidence of abnormal sperm in BC is increasing, and may be associated with things like smoking, inactivity, stress or a poor diet. The analysis examines concentration (the number of sperm per mL of seminal fluid); motility (the percentage of mobile sperm in the seminal fluid); and morphology (the percentage of sperm which has a normal and functional shape).

Treatments may include diet and lifestyle recommendations, or supplements to improve the health of your sperm.

A consult with a Naturopathic Doctor is recommended if you receive abnormal results.

Why test food sensitivities?

Testing food sensitivities can help you identify foods which may not be agreeing with you. This test looks at your IgG reaction to a large number of foods. A higher IgG reactivity level indicates that it’s likely the food you are eating is giving you symptoms.

Most people feel a lot better when they don’t eat the foods they react to on this test. A consult with a Naturopathic Doctor is recommended if you receive abnormal results.

Why test for SIBO?

A SIBO test can help you understand and resolve your digestive symptoms. SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), is an intestinal condition which results from abnormal growth of bacteria in the small intestine.

SIBO testing and diagnosis in BC is growing. SIBO is thought to occur in about 30% of people who have bloating.

Treatments may include diet and lifestyle recommendations, or supplements to resolve this condition.

A consult with a Naturopathic Doctor is recommended if you receive abnormal results.

Why test TSH or do a thyroid assessment?

A TSH test can help you identify if there are problems with your thyroid and monitor the success of thyroid treatments.

Abnormal thyroid function affects about 1 in 10 Canadians, and is more common after 45 and in women rather than men.

Treatments may include modification of diet and lifestyle, and in some cases, taking medications.

A results consult with a Naturopathic Doctor is recommended if you are not familiar with this test, or you are not familiar with getting your TSH tested.
